Our Story
John and Martina embarked on their coffee-roasting journey amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Tekapo, New Zealand.

Nestled against the backdrop of the lake's mesmerising turquoise waters and the pristine alpine air of the majestic Southern Alps, our family-owned venture, Southern Sky Roasters, emerged. Over months, we carefully transformed a shipping container into a chic and functional workspace. Recognising the importance of supporting local partnerships, we collaborated with Stonker Roasters, a Christchurch-based company, to handcraft a bespoke roaster that is the heart of our operations. Committed to ethical practices, we source organic, fair trade coffee beans imported through Trade Aid Importers to support fair and sustainable farming practices globally. Then, artisanal roasting techniques are employed to bring out the unique flavours of the beans, ensuring each batch we roast tastes exceptional and mirrors the tranquillity and purity of our surroundings. Now, coffee beans are roasted under the vast, starlit sky that inspired its name.
Get To Know Us Better
When John and Martina aren’t roasting small-batch coffee, you’ll likely find them out embracing the wild beauty of the Mackenzie Region - stargazing in the International Dark Sky Reserve, hiking the alpine trails around Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount John, or riding the local mountain bike tracks that start just behind the roastery at Cowans Hill.
They make the most of every season - skiing the slopes of Round Hill Ski Area in winter, wakeboarding and boating on Lake Tekapo in summer, and hunting or biking along epic routes like the Alps to Ocean trail in between. After an adventurous day, there’s nothing better than soaking in the Tekapo Springs, taking in the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks.
Come visit us at Southern Sky Roasters, taste what fuels our adventures, and experience a slice of Tekapo for yourself.
